Mexico

More than ten people are murdered every day in Ciudad Juárez, a city about the size of Philadelphia. As Mexico has descended into a feudal narco-state-one where cartels, death squads, the army, and local police all fight over billions of dollars in profits from drug and human trafficking-the border city of Juárez has been hit hardest of all. And yet, more than a million people still live there. They even love their impoverished city, proudly repeating its mantra: "Amor por Juárez."

Nothing exemplifies the spirit and hope of Juarenses more than the Indios, the city's beloved but hard-luck soccer team. Sport may seem a meager distraction, but to many it's a lifeline. It drew charismatic American midfielder Marco Vidal back from Dallas to achieve the athletic dreams of his Mexican father. Team owner Francisco Ibarra and Mayor José Reyes Ferriz both thrive on soccer. So does the dubiously named crew of Indios fans, El Kartel. In this honest, unflinching, and powerful book, Robert Andrew Powell chronicles a season of soccer in this treacherous city just across the Rio Grande, and the moments of pain, longing, and redemption along the way. As he travels across Mexico with the team, Powell reflects on this struggling nation and its watchful neighbor to the north. This story is not just about sports, or even community, but the strength of humanity in a place where chaos reigns.

One of the greatest peacetime epics of human endeavor, the creation of the Panama Canal captured, for decades, the world's imagination. Now a major cruise destination, the Canal was the 'moon launch' of its day, plunging France into near financial and political ruin before becoming the crowning achievement of America under President Theodore Roosevelt, ushering in an era of global trade and prosperity.
Anne Vipond, author of several books on cruising, describes the engineering challenges faced and the personalities involved in this fascinating saga, and provides practical information to help passengers make the most of their time in port. Descriptions of each country, island and port of call are supported by in-depth research and detailed maps. Includes Florida, islands of the Caribbean, the Canal, Central America, Mexican Riviera and the West Coast ports.

Friedrich Gerstäcker (geb. 1816 in Hamburg, gest.

“I move throughout the world without a plan, guided by instinct, connecting through trust, and constantly watching for serendipitous opportunities.” —From the Preface

Tales of a Female Nomad is the story of Rita Golden Gelman, an ordinary woman who is living an extraordinary existence. At the age of forty-eight, on the verge of a divorce, Rita left an elegant life in L.A. to follow her dream of connecting with people in cultures all over the world. In 1986 she sold her possessions and became a nomad, living in a Zapotec village in Mexico, sleeping with sea lions on the Galapagos Islands, and residing everywhere from thatched huts to regal palaces. She has observed orangutans in the rain forest of Borneo, visited trance healers and dens of black magic, and cooked with women on fires all over the world. Rita’s example encourages us all to dust off our dreams and rediscover the joy, the exuberance, and the hidden spirit that so many of us bury when we become adults.

Mexico

Twenty miles south of the Arizona-Mexico border, the rugged, beautiful Sierra Madre mountains begin their dramatic ascent. Almost 900 miles long, the range climbs to nearly 11,000 feet and boasts several canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon. The rules of law and society have never taken hold in the Sierra Madre, which is home to bandits, drug smugglers, Mormons, cave-dwelling Tarahumara Indians, opium farmers, cowboys, and other assorted outcasts. Outsiders are not welcome; drugs are the primary source of income; murder is all but a regional pastime. The Mexican army occasionally goes in to burn marijuana and opium crops -- the modern treasure of the Sierra Madre -- but otherwise the government stays away. In its stead are the drug lords, who have made it one of the biggest drug-producing areas in the world. Fifteen years ago, journalist Richard Grant developed what he calls "an unfortunate fascination" with this lawless place. Locals warned that he would meet his death there, but he didn't believe them -- until his last trip. During his travels Grant visited a folk healer for his insomnia and was prescribed rattlesnake pills, attended bizarre religious rituals, consorted with cocaine-snorting policemen, taught English to Guarijio Indians, and dug for buried treasure. On his last visit, his reckless adventure spiraled into his own personal heart of darkness when cocaine-fueled Mexican hillbillies hunted him through the woods all night, bent on killing him for sport. With gorgeous detail, fascinating insight, and an undercurrent of dark humor, God's Middle Finger brings to vivid life a truly unique and uncharted world.

Baja California Birdman is his spiritual name and his pen name. Baja has written this novelette based on his his real life adventures. This would be one hundred percent non-fiction if Baja hadn’t thrown in one Jalapeno pepper to add some spice to his story. For several winter seasons he travelled around Baja California in his camper with his powered paraglider and photography gear.

Baja loves flying over the beautiful shorelines of Baja California. He cherishes the unspoiled land and hates the evil entity he calls progress which is now eating up Baja California and converting it into a cement jungle. He shares his stories while he prepares his flying machine for a flight.

He was once an aerospace engineer. His management wanted him out so they nailed him for stealing time. That gave him an excuse for a much more interesting adventure. He judges the name Human Being as too uppity for humans. He calls them human animals. He thinks they are just intelligent animals and are not divine in any way.

He has invented magical world models to explain the things he sees. His models make life more enjoyable. He analyses everything and never stops thinking. He recognizes that as one of his problems. He has been questioning his recent behavior and come up with a disturbing conclusion.

El Norte is the all powerful wind that blows strong out of the north in the Baja. One time he blew hard and Baja’s paraglider hurled and dragged him across the desert. Baja has had other close calls with el Norte. Baja has created an interesting world model for el Norte the All Powerful Baja Wind God.

Baja had provided a web link to a picture album so the reader can see some of the places. The pictures are arranged in order and follow the story.

Description #2 by Ann's Gift Shop:

Brother and sister Enrique and Rosa flee persecution at home in Guatemala and journey north, through Mexico and on to the United States, with the dream of starting a new life. It sa story that happens every day, but until Gregory Nava's groundbreaking El Norte (The North), the personal travails of immigrants crossing the border to America had never been shown in the movies with such urgent humanism. A work of social realism imbued with dreamlike imagery, El Norte is a lovingly rendered, heartbreaking story of hope and survival, which critic Roger Ebert called a Grapes of Wrath for our time.
